Your smartphone camera is powerful enough to produce professional document scans. But most people do it wrong โ bad lighting, skewed angles, wrong file format โ and end up with blurry, unpresentable results. This guide shows you the right way.
Built-in Scanning Apps (No Extra Download Needed)
- iPhone (iOS 16+) โ Open the Notes app โ New Note โ Camera icon โ Scan Documents. Or use Files app โ Browse โ scan button in top-right corner.
- Android (Google Drive) โ Open Google Drive โ tap the + button โ Scan. Produces a clean searchable PDF directly.
- Samsung โ Samsung Notes or Samsung Scanner (built-in on newer Galaxy models).
7 Tips for a Perfect Scan
Use flat, even lighting โ Natural window light is best. Avoid strong shadows from overhead lights. Never scan with a torch pointing at the document.
Place the document on a dark background โ A dark desk or black cardboard makes it much easier for the app to detect document edges.
Hold your phone parallel to the document โ Even a slight angle will cause trapezoidal distortion. Most apps correct this, but a straight shot is always better.
Clean your camera lens โ Phone lenses pick up fingerprints constantly. A quick wipe on a cloth before scanning makes a visible difference.
Use the highest resolution available โ For documents you will later print or submit officially, use full resolution. You can always compress later.
Check auto-crop and straighten โ Most scanning apps auto-detect edges. Always review and adjust the crop before confirming.
Export as PDF, not JPG โ PDF preserves sharpness better for multi-page documents and is universally accepted for official submissions.
Scan all pages in one session to get a single multi-page PDF. If you have JPGs from separate scans, use our JPG to PDF tool to combine them into one document.
