What unit are the margin numbers in?
Points — the standard PDF unit, where 72 points equal 1 inch, so a 36-point margin trims about half an inch from that side.
Can I crop each page to a different size?
No — the same margin is applied to every page uniformly; pages with different original sizes will end up with different final sizes if you use the same margin numbers.
