Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both approaches are acceptable, though tipping on the pre-tax (subtotal) amount is technically more common. Our calculator lets you set the tax separately so you can decide.
What is a good tip percentage?
15% is historically the standard minimum for good service. 18-20% is now the norm in the US. 25-30% is for exceptional service. Many default restaurant prompts now start at 20%.
Why use rounding when splitting?
Rounding makes cash payments easier. "Round up" means each person pays a bit more, covering any shortfall. "Round down" means each person pays a bit less, so one person may need to pay a tiny bit extra to cover the full total.
