Frequently Asked Questions

What is HEIC and why do iPhones use it?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's preferred photo format, introduced in iOS 11. It delivers better image quality at roughly half the file size of JPEG. The trade-off is that many non-Apple devices and apps can't open HEIC files natively.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The heic2any JavaScript library decodes your HEIC files entirely within your browser. Nothing is uploaded or transmitted anywhere.
What quality setting should I use?
For sharing or social media, 80–85% is a great balance. For printing or archiving, use 92–100%. For web thumbnails where file size matters, 70–75% works well.
Why can't I see a preview before converting?
Browsers don't natively support displaying HEIC images, so previews are shown as file icons before conversion. After conversion, the thumbnails are updated to show the actual JPG output.
How many HEIC files can I convert at once?
There's no hard limit. You can convert as many files as your device memory allows. For best performance on large batches, we recommend up to 50 files at a time.
Does this support HEIF files too?
Yes! HEIF (.heif) is the container format and HEIC is the specific Apple implementation. Both are supported by this converter.
