Frequently Asked Questions

What is a robots.txt file?
A robots.txt file is a plain text file placed at the root of your website that instructs web crawlers (bots) which pages or sections they may or may not crawl. It follows the Robots Exclusion Protocol. It does NOT prevent pages from being indexed if other sites link to them — for that, use noindex meta tags.
Where do I place the robots.txt file?
The robots.txt file must be placed at the root of your domain: https://example.com/robots.txt. Placing it in a subdirectory (like /blog/robots.txt) won't work — crawlers only look at the root. For subdomains, each needs its own robots.txt file.
Does robots.txt block pages from appearing in Google?
Disallowing a page in robots.txt prevents Googlebot from crawling it, but it does not guarantee the page won't appear in search results. Google may still index a URL it can't crawl if other sites link to it. To prevent indexing entirely, use a "noindex" meta tag or X-Robots-Tag HTTP header.
What paths should I disallow in robots.txt?
Common paths to disallow include /admin/, /wp-admin/, /login/, /cart/, /checkout/, /search?, /api/, and any private areas. Never disallow paths that contain important content or CSS/JS files that Google needs to render your pages correctly.
Should I block GPTBot and AI crawlers?
That's your choice. GPTBot (OpenAI), Anthropic-AI, and similar AI training crawlers can be blocked in robots.txt. However, this only works if they respect the protocol. To block them, add a separate User-agent: GPTBot block with Disallow: /. Use our "Add Bot" feature to add these easily.

Robots Txt Generator — Complete Guide

This free online robots txt generator tool is designed to work entirely in your browser — no uploads, no waiting, no software installation needed. It's fast, private, and completely free to use without any account or subscription.

💡 Include sitemap URL

Always add Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml to your robots.txt.

💡 Block admin areas

Disallow /admin/ and other backend paths to prevent crawlers from indexing private areas.

💡 Test in Google Search Console

After publishing, use Google Search Console's robots.txt tester to verify your rules.

💡 Don't block CSS and JS

Ensure robots.txt doesn't block CSS, JavaScript, or images — Googlebot needs to render your pages.

A properly configured robots.txt file guides search engine crawlers, protects private pages, and ensures important content gets indexed.
