Frequently Asked Questions

Why does pixel width matter more than character count?
Google measures title display space in pixels, not characters. A title with 55 narrow characters (like 'iii') might be 200px wide, while 55 wide characters (like 'WWW') could exceed 900px. Character count is a rough guide, but pixel width tells you exactly when Google will truncate your title with an ellipsis (…).
What makes a good SEO title?
A great SEO title: (1) includes the primary keyword, ideally near the beginning, (2) stays within 600px / ~60 characters, (3) is compelling enough to earn clicks, (4) accurately describes the page content, (5) may include a brand name at the end, and (6) avoids keyword stuffing or ALL CAPS.
Does Google always use my title tag?
Not always. Google may rewrite your title if it thinks the tag is keyword-stuffed, misleading, too short, or doesn't match the page content well. The best way to prevent rewrites is to write descriptive, concise, non-spammy titles that closely match your H1 heading and page content.
Should I include my brand name in the title?
For most pages, yes — adding " | BrandName" or " – BrandName" at the end improves click-through rate and brand recognition. However, keep it at the end so your primary keyword appears first. For your homepage, leading with your brand name is often more appropriate.
